LEGACY Oktober/99 ESTATIC FEAR Ich weiß nicht, ob Ihr das seinerzeit leider ziemlich unbeachtet gebliebene Debut-Album der österreichischen Band ESTATIC FEAR kennt, welches sich seinerzeit besonders durch das 32 minütige Titelstück beeindruckte, aber das neue Album der ,,Band" (eigentlich handelt es sich inzwischen um ein Solo-Projekt des einzig verbleibenden Bandmitglieds Matthias Kogler) schlägt jene CD noch um Längen. ,,A Sombre Dance" ist ein Opus, welches in zehn Kapitel unterteilt wurde, die keine eigenen Titel tragen, sondern einfach nur durch numeriert wurden, und ein fantastisches Gesamtbild abgeben welches man durchaus zum melancholischen Gothic Metal-Bereich zählen muß, aber auch Elemente aus der Klassik dem Black- und Death Metal und bombastischen und mittelalterlichen Tönen aufgreift. Dabei schert sich Matthias keineswegs um musikalische Konventionen, sondern setzt fernab sämtlicher Klischees seine musikalische Vision von traurig schöner Musik um, die immer wieder von kurzen aggressiven Einschüben, die sich meist im Gesang manifestieren, unterbrochen wird. In dieser Platte kann man sich verlieren. Sie nimmt dich bei der Hand und trägt dich hinfort in eine andere Welt, wo du träumen darfst, einfach mal die Seele baumeln läßt und einen Schutz vor der Realität gefunden hast, in welchem du neue Kraft sammeln kannst, um dich der Welt da draußen zu stellen. Dürfte ich in diesem Jahr nur eine CD kaufen, es wäre diese hier! jedes Bauteil der ergreifenden Songs reiht sich perfekt aneinander um ein Bild zu schaffen, welches man einfach als geschlossenes, als gesamtes Kunstwerk begreifen muß. Neben der normalen, sprich metallischen Instrumentierung wird der Hörer hier mit Klängen von laute, Flöte, Klavier, Cello, etc. verwöhnt. Natürlich fehlt auch der obligatorische Frauengesang nicht, der hier so wunderschön geraten ist, daß ich es nicht in Worte fassen kann, und dabei sämtliche Engelsstimmen anderer Bands in die Schranken weist. Eigentlich reicht unser Bewertungssytem gar nicht aus, um hier eine angemessene Punktzahl für dieses Kunstwerk zu vergeben, welches ESTATIG FEAR sofort auf den verwaisten Gothic Metal-Thron befördert hat Dieses Album ist der Beweis, daß es sie noch gibt, die CD für die Ewigkeit. Ich liebe dieses Album, höre es Tag und Nacht. Vielleicht die beste Platte des Jahres 1999! Vielleicht das beste Gothic Metal-Album aller Zeiten. Damit werden selbst Könner wie Tristania, Within Temptation, My Dying Bride, Sophor Aeternus und Haggard in die zweite Liga verwiesen. (OB) 15/15 Punkte

METAL HEART 10/99 Estatic Fear "A Sombre Dance" CD (CCP/Connected) Es ist die Freude der Trauernden an der Trauer, welche dies tiefe Gefühl noch aufrechterhält... Wunderschöne Melodien und das Wechselspiel zwischen mittelalterlicher, sanft instrumentierter depressiver Minne und dem absolut wehklagenden Black/Death Marke Dornenreich machen das Meisterwerk "A Sombre Dance" zu einem Gothic Black Metal-Highlight dieser Monate. Estatic Fear verstehen (beziehungsweise versteht, da es sozusagen ein Solo-Projekt ist) es hervorragend, die anscheinenden musikalischen Gegensätze zu verbinden und zu einem Ganzen zu machen. Das Album ist ein musikalisch hochwertiges, von der Instrument-Auswahl sehr feines und von den Melodien sehr feingliedriges Schmuckkästchen, das kein Fan dieser Stilrichtung links liegenlassen sollte. 9,5 Punkte Thomas Sonder

Rock Hard ESTATIC FEAR (CCP/Connected) Ist das jetzt ein gutes Zeichen, daß sich die Katze schnurrend an mich kuschelt, während diese Platte läuft? Der verstärkte Einsatz von allerlei klassischen Instrumenten - vom Klavier über Flöten und Cello bis hin zur Orgel - verbreitet auf jeden Fall eine melancholische Grundstimmung, die von der klaren Frauenstimme noch verstärkt wird. Zwischendurch wird die arme Katze aber immer wieder durch Doublebass-Attacken, Bratgitarren und bösen männlichen Grunzgesang aufgeschreckt: ein schlechtes Zeichen? Soll ein Haustier überhaupt zur Bewertung von Musik konsultiert werden? (Herzi, wir sind hier nicht In der tierthe-rapeutischen Beratungsstunde von Dr. Pferdekuß; komm - zur Sache! - Red.) Nein, diese Verantwortung muß ich wohl ganz alleine übernehmen. (Danke! - Red.) Also: Das Zweitwerk der Österreicher ist geprägt von den teils sehr langen, mittelalterlich anmutenden Klassikpassagen. Wenn die Axt dann mal zum Vorschein kommt, tut sie dies recht konsequent und überzeugend, vergleichbar etwa mit Edge Of Sanit', aber auch nicht wirklich überraschend und vor allem zu kurz, um wirkli-chen Schaden anzurichten. Wer's also gern wirklich hart mag, wird wahrscheinlich enttäuscht sein. Wer aber vielleicht gerade Liebeskummer hat oder generell an Schwermut leidet und sich den Herbst her-beisehnt, der sollte ruhig mal ein Ohr riskieren. Nicht unbedingt sensationell, aber sehr solide. ETERNAL MORNING #5 Oktober 99 Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance (CCP-Records) Mit einer leichtflüssigen Eleganz an Akustikgitarrenarbeit wird "A Sombre Dance" eingeleitet, bevor das erste Stück mit einer Explosion des Schlagzeuges und dem Einsatz der Frauenstimme beginnt. Hinter Estatic Fear steht Matthias Kogler, ein sehr talentierter Musiker, den die ganze CD ausarbeitete, wobei ihm bei der Ausführung diverse Sessionmembers halfen. Die IX Chapter, aber zehn Lieder, wurden mit einen mittelalterlichen Touch und Andacht ausgetüftelt, und die einzelnen Melodien haben sehr viel Spielraum sich zu entfalten. Mir fällt dabei immer der Vergleich mit Empyrium ein, denn auch das gleiche Gedankengut wurde lyrisch verarbeitet. Der ganzen CD haftet ein roter Faden der melancholischen Schwermütigkeit an, und auch der innere Zwiespalt drückt sich mit den BM-lastigen Stimmen aus. Einfach nur genial und nicht alltäglich ! Pr.

EMBERS-ONLINEZINE Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance Playing Time - 49:37 When I bought this album last year, I didn't have a clue what the fuck Ecstatic Fear was. It seemed to be some gothic-doom metal-like CD, and at the time there was virtually nothing new of the more famous bands, so I thought what the heck, let's buy some goth for a change. Time has proven that it was one of the best CDs I ever bought. This one has just got it all : slow, moody parts, loud headbanging hard black-like melodies, catchy tunes, deep lyrics and magnificent artwork. The Austrian gothic-doom band Ecstatic Fear started out in 1994 with their debut album "Sommnium Obmutum". The Ecstatic Fear homepage claims this CD had a huge succes (I didn't notice anything of an Ecstatic Fear hype at that time, though), and three years later "A Sombre Dance" was released. By that time (1999) everyone but Matthias Kogler had left the band. As a result, the CD can be seen as the brainchild of a single musical genious. The backdraw, however, was that Kogler had to depend on session musicians for the recording. Luckily this doesn't affect the CD in a negative sense. On the contrary, every instrument from the lute to the electric guitars seems to have been handled with great skill. Indeed, Kogler isn't afraid to use some less conventional instruments to create a unique medieval-gothic like atmosphere. Apart from the classic four-piece metal ensemble, he has also put keyboards, piano, chello, flute and the lute on "A Sombre Dance". Of half this orchestra, Kogler himself takes the electric and classic guitars as well as the piano and the keyboard for his account. Of these especially the keys sound great in their interplay with the chello or electric guitars. The chello also is a big asset in Ecstatic Fear's sound. Mostly this instrument is prominently present, which is further stressed by the production. This chello, together with the lute, the flute, the piano and the female vocals form a brilliant contrast, a sort of clair-obscur if you want, to the classical metal armamentarium. Mostly they form a sort of intro to the louder parts. In this function they mostly foreshadow the main melody. The louder part then features grunts and screams and loud distortion guitars with a prominent role for the bass guitar. Mostly at least one of the 'softer' instruments from the intro still go on during this part. The only thing I miss perhaps in these louder parts are lead guitars, but then again, this music doesn't ask for lead guitars lest the gothic-medieval atmosphere might be ruined. The structure of the songs isn't the typical bridge - solo - refrain. Ecstatic Fear tries to bring some variation in the (at first sight perhaps monotonous genre of) gothic metal it brings. Although all songs clearly are in the same vein, they all sound quite different, yet never so different that they would break the overall atmosphere of melancholy "A Sombre Dance" tries to evoke. This is one of those albums that have a sort of hypnotising effect on me in the sense that I can just keep listening to it for days on end, and never get bored. Only great bands such as Morbid Angel (I'm not talking about a stylistic comparison here) have such an impact on me. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at the CCP studio, and the people over there did a great job. All the instruments and vocals (twelve in total !) sound just as they should. Thumbs up for the guys at the CCP studio ! The only drawback might have been that there's perhaps a bit too much emphasis on the bass instruments (i.e. the chello and the bass guitar), but I don't think this is a bad thing for this kind of music. Especially the great importance the chello plays in the music sounds great. Ecstatic Fear tries to evoke an atmosphere of melancholy in it's music as in it's lyrics. Matthias Kogler tries to explore the soothing effect melancholy can have on people, or to put it in his own words, "This album is dedicated to all those, who have and still to [sic.] enjoy the pure and intense calmness which melancholy can bestow upon us.". He elaborates this theme in very poetical lyrics displaying his great knowledge of English. He even incorporates a regular three-beat scheme in his verses. This is just pure poetry put to music ! The artwork also breathes the same atmosphere of melancholy. The booklet, although not very big, is illustrated with beautiful medieval-looking initials. The text is surrounded by a nice-looking border in which some pretty drawings are incorporated. "A Sombre Dance" has become one of my all-time favourite albums. Although I'm not a gothic fan, this album could tempt me with its melancholic poetry put on enchanting gothic-doom metal. The enormous range of instruments and vocals (no less than twelve!) are combined in a serene, never bombastic-sounding piece of pure art. In my opinion this was one of the best (if not, the best) CD of 1999. 97/100 Lycanthrope
